Over the last several, decades our children have become less and less active. Every day activities such as playing outside and walking to school have slowly gone by the wayside as computers, television, videogames, and two car families have become commonplace.
According to federal statistics less than 16% of our children walk or ride a bike to school. Childhood obesity in the United States has become a crisis on the national level. As reported by the National Institute of Health, 70% of overweight children will become overweight or obese adults. And, sadly, during the last decade, Type II Diabetes in children has risen dramatically.
As our modern life habits become more sedentary, it is imperative we teach our children the skills needed to live an active healthy lifestyle. A school-aged running program could be the first step to changing the lifelong habits of our children.
Created by Runners and Educators
The curriculum provided through SimplyRun will help you develop a school-aged running program. This plan is an ongoing and ever-changing project that began as a basic after-school running club and has developed into a more concrete plan using the input of the educators, students, and parents. Over the years, the inclusion of pieces such as nutrition, a fun run, and writing were added as knowledge, experience, and research increased.
